I am also receiving the same prompt to "Select a certificate to authenticate yourself to api.paypal.com:443" when I visit merchant site guitarcenter.com. To my understanding and research of this prompt, this is intended for legitimate merchants who use paypal to collect payments. I am not a merchant but rather a consumer and therefore strongly feel this is a hack to attempt to comprimise my paypal login. I also visited the site submitted by original poster and that site also prompts me the same Select a certificate prompt which leads me further to believe this is hack. This issue all started when I visited a site for my local guitar repair shop www.edclarkguitars.com and also www.edclarkguitars.net. My Bitdefender app warned me the page was blocked for my protection. Thinking this was a false positive I proceeded anyway since I knew the merchant, poor decision on my part. Some helpful info, this issue occurs on my Windows 10 PC, it doesn't appear to be happening to my Windows 11 PC or my chromebook, both of which are connected to the same LAN. Some steps I've taken were to remove the certificates from my browser settings but new one always re-appear. I then decided to do a full Windows 10 reset and as of today, day 1 after reset, the same prompt comes up. I've checked for browser plug-in/exentsions as mentioned but non that are foreign, the only extensions that exist are Google Docs offline and Bitdefender Anti-tracker, the latter which is switched off on my Windows 10 PC but switched on the Windows 11 PC. I'm going to switch it on my Win 10 PC to see if it helps eliminate this problem. I also notice my security settings for my chrome browser on my Windows 11 PC was set to Ehnanced protection where as my Windows 10 was set to Standard protection. I have now just set it to Enhanced as well. I'm going to remove these certificates yet again since making these new changes and I will report back if the problem persists or is resolved. I've included some screenshots that I hope will be useful in analyzing this problem. Going back to how this all started by visiting the edclarkguitars URLs mentioned above, Bitdefender has notified me that the suspicious connection that was block was attempting to establish a connection relying on an untrusted certificate, which is what further leads me to believe is the culprit of these "Select a Certificate" prompts. I appreciate any feedback or steps I can do to permanently stops these false certificate alerts. Thank you in advance.
