Is this even legal?

I had a authorized monthly purchase from IONOS in the amount of $5.00 for about the last 8 months. On 07/07/2023, out of the blue, I get an email from PayPal that the $260ish automatic payment to IONOS was declined and they'd try again. I immediately withdrew authorization for autopayments to IONOS, let PayPal know there was an issue, and contacted IONOS. IONOS cancelled out my account and sent me an email with the cancellation information and an invoice stating the full amount would be put back into my PayPal within a few days. No money was taken from my account and I thought everything was fine. Yesterday, I deposited a check. 😞 PayPal immediately made another attempt and took $101.76 from my account for one of the IONOS payments. I filed a dispute, sent the promise of credit invoices from IONOS to PayPal, and was irritated to find that I have to wait until the 21st to possibly get my money back. So I unlinked my bank account and my debit card from my PayPal account. Today, PayPal tried again for the $144.20 invoice payment. Bank declined cuz I don't have the money in there and my PayPal account says it is -$144.20.  I am not understanding why I am supposed to pay for charges that I never authorized, then wait two weeks to possible be refunded. I also don't understand how PayPal can charge my account, even if it is a retry, AFTER I withdrew my permission???? I authorized the $5 a month payment and kept PayPal on file to pay each month. I never authorized a different amount to be charged and IONOS is promised me a full refund. So....my question is, how is this legal of them to do? By withdrawing my bank and card information, and my consent for automatic payments; I was under the assumption, that I feel most people would have had; PayPal no longer had access to my accounts. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm calling them as soon as they open cuz this is not right. I'm also thinking about hitting up the BBB website as well.  ... View more
