I keep getting marketing emails from PayPal--for their credit card, for special offers to sign up with their business partners... They've also lost my business because of their overly-intrusive mobile phone requirement. Like you said, you can't even get help at PP anymore without first entering your mobile phone data. There are far too many privacy-centric business alternatives out there to keep using PayPal, so I've left, too. None of these companies will help you when your data is stolen and you face the consequences of malicious actors. ... View more

I emailed Paypal that I couldn't change my bank info because I'm using just VOIP. They seemed pretty accommodating, replying that I could call them to do it by phone. First thing their automated system asked for was a security code they sent to my VOIP. This must be happening more often b/c my VOIP service wants to CHARGE ME specifically to receive verification codes. US citizens aren't required by law to have mobile phones. There are other ways of verifying identity that don't cost consumers extra money for poor service/tech. Thankfully, Ebay no longer requires a PayPal account--which was the only reason I created my account.  ... View more

Three reasons:   1) That's not what I find. I do most of my work and business online and Paypal is the ONLY company I've ever done business with that requires a mobile number. Every other company either offers alternative verification means OR accepts VOIP numbers. Paypal rejects the VOIP numbers I've supplied, even though I've had one for going on 15 years. 2) It's not worth it to me to pay for poor (or exorbitant) cell service just for the convenience of another company--especially one that's not critical to me.  3) I'm not required by law to do so--on the contrary, as someone else has already pointed out, companies are encouraged (required?) to accept other verification means. The more consumers resist the push to require everyone to pay for mobile service, the more likely companies will find other suitable alternatives. VOIP doesn't work for many of us. I've given PP two VOIP numbers and PP has rejected both of them. I don't want to spend cash on a wireless service plan in my area that has horrible service with all the big carriers, let alone buy a disposable phone for just a single account verification.    ...
