Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me. I've recently transfered money to someone in Russia, as payment for some artwork. The money went through OK and I receved this email from him on Aug 1st ''I have received (amount redacted) USD at the moment''.
So far so good, but today I recieved an email from him saying that some of the money has gone, which he explained as ''Paypal takes some percent from some transfers (if it's not from another paypal account I think). So paypal took 4-5% ($36.77) from the money that you sent.''
Frankly I don't know what to make of it. I thought that the paypal fee was taken out of the conversion rate, that's what it said on the website when I made the transfer.
I've thought about phoning paypal directly, but I thought I'd try here first. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
Best Wishes,
Jamale

Sounds like he's been subjected to a few PayPal fees.
- There's a 3.4% + 20p fee to sell on PayPal. This covers for the buyer and seller protection.
- There may be a cross-border fee, as it does cost PayPal extra to get money between different countries. From the UK to Russia, that's 0.5%.
- And there may also be a currency conversion fee. That can change depending on exchange rates.
For a definitive break down, you would need to talk to PayPal, but that's at least a brief overview of what he could be looking at.
