My account was compromised.

My account was compromised in the early hours of Saturday morning. A person logged in and was able to upgrade my account to a business account and add a phony address, number and a bank account. PayPal allowed this to occur because its system recognised the device despite it being done through Chrome for windows which I've never used because I have no devices using windows. They had also been sent $280 from someone that was set to be automatically transferred into the bank account they added at 1am the following morning once it was verified.

I was able to secure the account and I raised a dispute with PayPal about this money in the account and how it came to be there. PayPal immediately closed my dispute and the sender has raised one that remains open which will apparently be resolved by the 14th November. Given the time frame I scrubbed all the info the person who accessed my account added in case the bank account they added became verified and they gained access again to transfer the money. I also have reoccurring payments on my account and I can't bypass the PayPal balance and pay directly from my bank account. I have added funds but that will take 2-3 days to credit. I want to know if its safe for me to simply refund this money to this person who sent it so I can close the dispute and be able to revert my account back to personal or am I opening myself to liability by performing this action instead of PayPal? PayPal has not contacted me about the open dispute directly for information yet. The person is most likely a victim as well but could be part of what was going on which is concerning. I just want this to be resolved as quickly as possible and it seems impossible to contact PayPal about anything beyond buying disputes.

If the funds are in your balance then contact customer services and request that they refund the buyer for you however you may lose the ''fee'' you were charged to receive the payment.

Contact options for each countries Paypal customer services are accessed by clicking help/contact bottom left of Paypal pages.

1. Paypal phones (you can use the guest option if you can't log in).
2. Live chat is also randomly available.
3. You can send them a message, (during business hours you may also be able to message whilst logged out).
4. Have you considered contacting Customer Service via Facebook or Twitter?
You can send them a private direct message via Social Media on Facebook, Twitter/X, or Instagram pages.
