UK as Default country at Checkout

I am located in the USA but when I checkout it defaults to the UK. Is there a way to default to USA?

Have you opened a UK or a US paypal account?

I set up a US account.  My bis address is in the US. My currency is set to USD. My time zone is US.

Sorry but looks as if you set up a UK account by mistake.

I am not sure that is the issue. 

I go to https://www.paypal.com/us/signin and sign in just fine with my account. 

The USD was default currency, I did not have to change that. 

Is there somewhere I can confirm what country the account is based in?

Click on settings (cog looking icon next to log out) and then on 'nationality' left side of page half way down.

After I click on the cog I get (1) Your Profile and (2) Account Settings. Here are the two menus on the left side. I do not see any menu item that says "nationality". Am I looking in the right place?
