Cannot validate PayPal account in Google Pay

Hi,

 

I've been long time user of PayPal, and in particular in combination with Google Pay. I've never had issues paying with my phone until today.

I went to the supermarket, went ahead as usual to pay with my phone when Google Pay told me PayPal has not been activated as a payment method. I have not touched either my PayPal account's settings (other than to update my phone number) for months, nor my payment methods in Google, thus this sudden change in behaviour is something which I find confusing and bizarre.

When I proceed to add my PayPal account again it wants me to validate myself - by calling a number in Germany, which doesn't work due to the coronavirus. Googling turned out 0 relevant results.

Does anybody have a clue how I can validate myself without calling a ghost number? Also why did this happen AT ALL?

 

p.s. just to clarify.... PayPal is indeed added as a payment method in Google PLay - less than 12 hours ago I made a purchase through the Play Store. The problem is it cannot be used in Google PAy to pay in shops.
