Can I use my PayPal debit card at a store if I have a zero balance?

I  am trying to find out if I use my PayPal Debit Card at restaurant or store and it has a zero balance if it will work? I know when I get gas it will directly take it from bank account that is linked but I didn't know if this worked the same everywhere and I know it works on-line but I didn't know if it worked if you used a debit card with zero balance. Thank you. Please Help As Soon As Possible!!

Yes, as long as it is tied to a backup account.

I have mine taken directly from my bank account for ALL purchases and I also get the cash back to.
