iOS Mobile App - Cannot log-in

I have just installed the PayPal iOS app on my iPhone Xs, running iOS 14.4.2.

After installation on a freshly rebooted phone, the app opens normally and shows the splash-screen with two buttons at the bottom of it: "Log-in" and "Sign-up".   I am a veteran user of PayPal so - Log-in.  This takes me to a page with the two expected fields: "E-mail:" and "Password".  I fill the correct credentials and the page changes to a new page titled "A quick security check".  On the page's upper half I see the PayPal logo and the text: "Security Challenge".  The rest of the page is utterly blank!  There is no security challenge to respond to, nothing!  If I let the phone go to sleep and reawaken it, the "A quick security check" page acquires, magically, a new feature: at the bottom of the page there is now a fill-able text-box.   I can type any string in that box but I do not know what it expects to receive!

Note that my PayPal account is set up to demand a one-time code, generated by an authenticator such as the Google Authenticator or similar app.  That works perfectly well on normal web-browser log-ins.   I did try to use the authenticator time-code in the text-box I described above, but that is clearly not what that expects.

I have also deleted and re-installed the app, for good measure.  It did not fix it.

The app does not allow me to complete the log-in process.  Please, help.
