Recurring charge fails--OK, but why?

Is there any way to determine the difference in the IPN for the following two events:
1) When a recurring charge failed (PayPal will reattempt to charge the customer)
2) When a subscription is cancelled by customer (Paypal will NOT attempt more charges)
At the moment it looks like both of these two events send a subscription cancelled IPN. It would be nice to know if / when the subscription was truly cancelled by the customer or simply skipped for some reason, known or unknown (tho known would be preferred). This would allow me to automate a response from my membership website to the effect:
1) You missed a payment -- your subscription is at risk, please check Paypal!
or...
2) Sorry to see that you cancelled, may we ask why/please see this special offer/etc.

Hello TpsMktg,
Welcome to the Community .
I certainly do understand where you are coming from. This may be something possible you could set up. However, PayPal does have a Developer Forum that would be able to better answer your questions. Here is a direct link. I hope this will help.
