We use all of the tax tables offered by New York State. All taxes are based on the COUNTY of residence we ship to. We recently found this site - http://www.zipmap.net/New_York.htm.
It shows ALL of the zip codes within each county. It does take time to poke around. You can look up the zip code and it shows what county the customer is in - then refer to the tax rate for that county.
We usually charge the HIGHEST rate - 8.875% - and then refund the difference. Our off-eBay website does have the capability to have the correct tax rate for each zipcode ( which we entered when an unknown zip code is submitted). Otherwise, we ask each NYS customer what county they reside in since NYS takes a dim view of overcharging or undercharging so we can refund immediately.
We request that any NYS customer who has a legitimate sales tax number to fill out tax form completely and fax it to us- we keep them on file in the event of an audit. It is not enough to have a tax number called in.
