When I put the code for my paypal button on my website, I got a box that said "Google gadget."  What's up with that?

Don't think this has anything to with PayPal.   The PayPal item button code is just an HTML Form.  What you need to do is research how your HTML Editor and/or Web Site handles HTML Forms.  Some HTML Editors must be in a particular mode or view in order to work with HTML Forms.  Some Web Sites do not permit  the insertion of HTML Forms but will allow text or hyperlinks.   If that's the case, then you need to use the text or hyperlink button code.  You can build your own Button Text Links from scratch or take advantage of the Online Button Creator within your PayPal Account.   After generating the button code online, select the "Email" tab to view the Text Link Code.   Note, the "Email" tab will not be available if have included dropdown selections or text boxes in your item button code.   This is because you cannot include dropdown selections or text boxes in a Text or Hyperlink.
