Hi Can anyone explain to me in simple terms why I’ve just been charged a fee of 3.8% by PayPal from receiving a £50 transfer from a friend?

Normally fees are 3.4% + 20p for goods / services.
So check how she 'sent' the money and see if she used the above option instead of family / friends.

Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Thank you for the reply I’ll check with her. Assume if she sends me money in future that if she selects friends and family payment then I will not be charged? Is that correct?

Yep and she won't have a charge either as long as she funds it from her paypal balance OR bank account, there is only a fee if a credit card is used.
