Sending money to an email address - am I covered if anything goes wrong?

I'm buying a boat - the price is 'too good to be true' - but he just wants half up front and half upon delivery. I want to pay via goods and services rather than friends and family - how do I do that. Or if I just send money to his email address am I covered if it goes wrong? Thanks so much, Marina
