I am new seller to paypal, and I have a buyer that is a little suspicious. I have a larger ticket item, and I am nervous that if there is any fraud involved that I may be out thousands of dollars. Is paypal really secure for sellers? Any suggestions on how to protect yourself?

Don't do it. You are not protected as aseller and with a high ticket item I would not risk it. You can read through all of the seller issues through several posts.
Sellers are no longer protected because there are no repercussion for the buyers. You can't leave them feedback and 99.9% of the time, paypal sides with the buyers and they know it. This is why I no longer sell on Ebay after years of selling.
Don't take the chance, you may regret it especially if it is already a "suspicious" buyer.
