Have also been hit with this e-cheque function,when you buy an item and do the usual pay now then transfered to ebay only to find the only way to pay is e check when usually you can pay by your bank account or credit card its now happened to me 3 times first time complained to paypal they said it was a problem with past history with me or the seller then phoned again to be told its part of paypals security checks then finaly today they have admitted that there is a big problem so what you have to do is get the sellers email address and use the "send a payment" function in your account and it works ok, a bit of a pain but is better than waiting 5-7 days for a e check to clear. shame on paypal !!!
UPDATE! Im finding it dificult to get the buyers email address because you cant send a email address through ebay it keeps knocking it back grrrrr
