how do I match up the items in my paypal accoumt with purchases in ebay?

I agree with you that it is difficult to match up the information from eBay and PayPal. Ebay info provides a buyer ID and Sales ID, but in PayPal they use the persons PayPal email address. So an automated alignment won't work. However you can download your sales information form both of them and and then cut and paste the needed information from one set of data to the other.
In eBay you can download your sales through the "File Management Center" found under Seller Tools on the Selling Manager Summary Page. (If you are not using Selling Manager I highly recomend it, and it's free!) From there you can select what information you want to download. It holds sales information for 90 days.
I usually use the eBay records as my primary info and paste the corresponding PayPal info onto the matching record.
