Divorce and account changes

My pp account was opened 14 years ago. Back when opened you had to have a credit card on file, my soon to be x husband had the only credit card so the account ( which has been solely mine) is under his name. As said we should be divorced by May 2018. So here is the problem the account email address is in my name and is my everyday email address. I want to be able to keep my email address for my new pp account that I will open once divorce papers are signed. Is that possible? If I close the account in his name, can I reopen in my name with the same email address? TIA

The account belongs to the person who's name is on the account regardless of what email address was used.
If you close that paypal account then that 'should' release the email address for you to use on a future account.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.
