USPS lost or misdelivered my package...

I ordered an item on Ebay about 2 weeks ago. The seller shipped it and sent me an email with tracking info. This past Monday I checked the tracking and saw that my package had supposedly been delivered that day. Now, I was home looking out the window when the postal carrier came on Monday and I watched as he walked to my mailbox, looked around, and walked away without leaving anything. He never even opened the mailbox! I've been dealing with the people at USPS, but it's useless. They admit that the package must have been misdelivered or lost because they happened to be using a mail carrier from another town that day and he must have simply made a mistake. They obviously don't care if I'm out my merchandise and my $80. They admitted it was their error, but said they couldn't do anything and wouldn't even be able to change the status on their tracking. The seller didn't purchase insurance, and there was no signature required. I obviously don't want the seller to pay for the USPS's incompetence, but what are my options here? Any help is much appreciated!
