Payment declined but money still goes through

Twice recently at a busy show I have taken payments for items that have been declined. It has come to light later (on peoples credit card statement) that the money did in fact go through. This is very embarrassing as I am blamed for the error. After the first time, I was extremely careful to show the customer that each payment was declined but I am very concerned about it for the future. Please help!
