No paypal account for joint bank account holders.

I had a paypal account for many years but decided to change my bank. We opened a joint bank account with the TSB and my wife changed her Paypal banking details accordingly. A few hours later, I went to change my details too, and link the new joint account to my Paypal one. I got a message saying something like "This bank account has the maximum Paypal links allowed"
So now I'm getting just a wee bit upset. Are paypal saying that of the millions of UK joint bank account holders , only one of them can have a Paypal account?
I emailed for clarity, and was told that this was Paypal policy "for security reasons" . What possible security risk could be increased by using my own joint bank account. ? I emailed again to protest and was advised to link my Paypal account to my old Bank account again. That would be the one that I closed and no longer have!!. She also said that Paypal did not do Joint accounts. I emailed AGAIN and asked if she knew the difference between a JOINT BANK ACCOUNT and a Paypal account.
Yes, linking my defunct bank account ,that would be a great idea I thought. By now, I knew I was in contact with an imbecile. How do these people manage to get dressed in the mornings without help?
Does anyone with more than the solitary brain cell ,have any idea if it is indeed Paypal policy that only ONE of the named account holder on a joint bank account can have a Paypal account. If so, could you please explain why it is a security risk?
Cheers

You can link a bank account to only one paypal account. >>>>>
Here are some common issues you might encounter when linking a bank account:
- The bank account must be a Canadian bank.
- The bank account can’t be linked to more than one account at a time.
- The bank account can't be linked if it has already been linked to 3 previous PayPal accounts.
- The name on the bank account must match the name on the PayPal account.
HOWEVER i have my joint bank account linked to my paypal account BUT its not linked to another paypal account as well as my husband uses another bank account.

So to answer those points.
A) It's rather difficult, if not impossible to open a Canadian Bank account whilst residing in Surrey ENGLAND.
B) A joint bank account held in the UK is an account with more than one account holder, all of equal status as an account holder.
C) The bank account in this instance has NEVER been linked to a Paypal account as it is a BRAND NEW account.
D) The name on the bank account (My own and my wife's) was not accepted by Paypal, so this is plainly not true.
Finally, nobody at Paypal was able to explain WHY there was an increased risk from Paypal accounts linked to the same JOINT bank account. They simply stopped replying to my Emailed question. By this action alone, they made it clear that they had absolutely why the risk was increased, nor even what the risk was.
I will shortly begin an attempt to stop Paypal from discriminating against customers who have joint bank accounts.

A.
Paypal is country specific so if you move country you have to open another paypal account in that country and add an address / phone number / and bank accounts from within that country.
B.
Agreed but you can't link ONE bank account to more than ONE paypal account.
C.
If its a UK bank account being added to a UK paypal account then you can add it to x1 paypal account.
D.
I have a joint bank account and have it added to my UK paypal account BUT you don't use BOTH names you just use ONE of those names...............have you been trying to add both?
eg say my JOINT bank account is ''B and S Adams'' then I open a paypal account and add my name of ''S Adams'' to that paypal account AND THAT IS FINE....
Paypal has to abide by what the banks allow them to do in each country so it may not just be paypal that made that rule. Must be a reason for it as i don't think it would matter to them if you shared a bank account, all they want to do is have you link a funding source so they make money.

OK, here's the latest installment. I thought I would give your advice a try (using jut one name from the joint account)
For the first time in months, I logged onto my Paypal account. I was kind of surprised to see that there was a debit card from my joint account, linked to my Paypal account, and awaiting confirmation!!!!
I had been specifically told that it was not possible to link this card, and that I should chose another bank account to link to.
(I have the emails saved, and have checked)
Never one to look a gift horse, I duly followed instructions and checked my bank account for the "small withdrawal" accompanied by a 4 digit code, which I entered into the Paypal account under "Verify my card".
I am told that the "small amount" will be refunded to my bank within 24 hours (it hasn't even been withdrawn yet according to my statement) and my card will then be "activated"
This is very strange, and I can only assume that the "customer services" person who emailed me with the information regarding joint bank accounts, was totally wrong (as I suspected at the time).
The message on the webpage when I originally tried to link this bank account card to paypal was also wrong as it clearly stated that the bank account had the maximum number of "paypal" links ( I E. 1) I have not yet used the Paypal account to pay for anything with the linked bank card so I won't be getting my hopes up just yet.
Thank you Kernowlass, for getting me to access the account again, as without your advice I wouldn't have found out that my debit card had been accepted and was awaiting verification.

Glad it worked for you.
Just remember that when you phone customer services you could well be speaking to a spotty youth, first day on the job, reading from a prepared script and keen to get you off the phone.

I didn't phone them, I emailed. No disrepect meant, but English obviously wasn't their first language, and try as I might, I couldn't get her to understand the difference between my bank account and my paypal account. She just kept saying the same rubbish over and over, so I suspect you right when you say it could have been someone on their first day, reading from a script. You would think even the dullest knife in the drawer would ask a supervisor for advice though.......perhaps not. Cheers anyway.
