Paypal card not linked to account

I'm having trouble linking my paypal debit card to my account. I reached out to support and have been messaging back and forth with them. They asked me for the first 4 digits of my card and now they're asking for the last 4. Should I give them the information?

Hi @Butterfly30,

Thank you for your first post in the Community Forum! I completely understand your caution regarding providing the financial information requested. I'll be happy to help you with some items to discern whether or not it's safe to provide that information.

On what platform are you messaging with support? If you are using any social media or app that is not within your PayPal account, then you should treat the discussion with some suspicion if they asked for your financial information. Our representatives are very careful about keeping financial information off social media messaging platforms. But there are fraudsters about who will pretend to be PayPal, and some are quite convincing!

If you are logged into your PayPal account at PayPal.com, or if you're within the official PayPal app, then it is possible that a representative made a mistake initially when asking for the first 4 of the number, or it's possible that they were using that information to determine whether or not it was a PayPal issued card. Typically, representatives will ask for the last 4 to identify a card within your profile or to help confirm your identity with other information, which is why it is so important to keep all that information private from others if possible. However, it is information that a support representative would need in order to assist.

I hope this information is helpful to you in assessing your risk!

Thanks for your reply! I was using paypal.com. I just thought it was strange that they asked for the first 4 numbers and then the last 4. I was just a little leery about it, because I have my bank and credit card linked to the account. You've been very helpful!
