Paypal took money out of my bank acct when money was still in Paypal acct

A friend of mine sent me some money that should have been sent as family and friends instead of purchasing an item...which was causing problems because it would not let me transfer the money until I shipped something...nothing to ship. Anyway, I refunded her the money in the PAYPAL acct and then next time I looked in my bank acct that money was taken from my bank. I am so confused since I was never able to transfer it to my personal account. Is there something I am missing?
