Why am I asked for a paypal account when I want to donate with a credit card?

I have a business account, and have set up a paypal donate button for my NGO, which allows for payments through paypal or by credit card. But when someone wants to donate by credit card, they are forced to set up paypal account (or connect to their own paypal account). I do not want my doners to have to do this, and thought it was not necessary to have a paypal account to pay through the paypal button. Any help appreciated.

Hi @ThomasMacintyre,

Welcome to the PayPal Community and thank you for your post!

I do understand your concern with this. There can be a few reasons that your customer (or you) may be experiencing issues checking out as a guest.

In some cases, PayPal will only allow you to use a card a certain amount of times on PayPal as a guest before it will prompt you to create or use your PayPal account. Also, if the system picks up that your customer has a PayPal account, it may urge them to log in.

I would recommend them to clear their cache and cookies or using an alternative browser to try and check out again as a guest. The system should not pick up that they have an account if your cache and cookies are cleared or if they are using an alternative browser.

I hope this helps!

Recently, we set up a new item and some "customers" are able to pay with Credit/Debit card and others receive the message

We're sorry, things don't appear to be working at the moment.  Selections for next steps include "try again" or "return to merchant".

This problem doesn't occur for all.  If "customers" pay with PayPal account then it goes thru successfully.  We have
"customers" who don't want to set up a PayPal account.

What are the options here?
