Permanently banned when changing name tied to account

I wanted to change the name tied to my account because it didn't follow the ToS guidelines (a fake name I put in when I made the account 10 years ago) and when I sent in a picture of my ID I was perma-banned for the names not matching.

Unfortunately, you violated TOS and was banned proper so you can’t use PayPal anymore. PayPal doesn’t let you change name significantly, ie. transferring account to an entirely different person’s name. If they allow it, anyone can swoop in to take over someone else’s account. Any money in the account is stuck as your ID and name given at sign up didn’t match. Never use fake name.

Try again opening account with your real info when you have moved dwellings, get new internet provider, new photo ID with updated address on it (or just use passport), new financials with updated address. Remember that if they can cross reference you to the banned account, any new account will be banned.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

just realised i also have been banned after tryin to update my name to what is actually is. same exact situation as you. in 2016 i used a pet name, recently realised i should have my actual name as i tried to link my paypal to a platform.. i would understand banning if we reported it stolen or was changing name to something not real but it’s the opposite, we followed their guide to correcting name, get banned instead..? i never had to do this process in 2016 so i don’t see how it is fair to push it onto us tryin to rectify it.

If you use a fake name on a legal financial account then yes it will be banned.

Do you have a fake name on your bank account or credit cards?

no ofc not but in 2016 they never required my ID or proof of name, i assumed it was just like cashapp where you can use any handle/name? i literally have the name “Little Kitty” on it, clearly not a real name & it just seems silly to limit old accounts fully with no chance to show it’s not stolen or have joke names that were allowed for years, thanks for replying tho.

I've helped on here for 15 years and you have always had to have your legal name on your paypal account.

You may have problems using cashapp to cash out with a fake name. Its not recommended on there either.
