I put a stop payment on a cancelled subscription.

I put a bank stop payment on a subscription because I had cancelled the subscription before the trial period ended. The subscription provider had emailed me that my subscription trial period was coming to a close and to indicate, from their website, if I wanted to subscribe. When the trial period ended a payment to the subscription provider appeared on my PayPal account. I didn't pay it and it went collection. A payment to PayPal was not made because I had no proof of cancellation as the cancellation was made from the subscription website. Has anyone experienced similar?
