Hello, I have the option to buy a musical instrument and pay via paypal. Considering that I don't trust the seller, can I send him money and put it on hold so that he can't take the money until I approve his payment, that is, until I make sure when the instrument arrives at my house that I bought the right thing?

Buyers do not have option to hold a payment. PayPal themselves may subject a payment to a 21 day hold depending on seller account history with PayPal. But buyers nevertheless have up to 180 days from date of payment to open a dispute that puts the funds on hold until the problem is resolved if there is a problem with transaction as long as you sent payment as goods and services, not friends and family. You can also ask seller for a PayPal Invoice which will result in a goods and services payment.
Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
