Customers not getting any message after payment

I have created a business account and used a smart button on the website. Enabled auto return and also has a thank you page. My website is in Google sites. When the customer makes a purchase using their Paypal account, then the pop up window just closes and there is no indication as to what happened. I get the transaction  in my account and the customer gets an email. But they don't see a thank you message or get redirected to my webpage. I have tested this several times and cannot get an answer on the web as well. Please help. Thanks.
