refunds

Here is my dilemma -

I made a purchase 7/9/20, received it 8/14/20 it did not work as I hoped so I returned it and they received it on 9/14/20. They said the refund was processed and would appear on the account but could take a couple statements. I waited and kept checking in with them but it did not show up Now they are telling me they cannot refund me because too much time has gone by and I can only get a store credit. The purchase was made through PayPal but charged to a credit card. PayPal is also telling me the transaction is too old (over 180 days). My contact with the company has been ongoing. I feel they took their time so it would cross the time line. Can anyone give me advice?
