payment pending

I sold an item online and received payment through paypal but it says pending. The buyer said it won't go through until it is shipped. That doesn't seem safe. Can you please tell me if this is customary?

Is it showing in your paypal balance or are you just relying on email confirmation?

Is it pending ie an echeque with a clearance date?

Is it pending or ON HOLD as a new seller?
