Unknown payment

I have received an unknown payment from someone who now wishes for it to be returned to them. How do I know this isn’t a scam

If the funds are SHOWING in your paypal balance and cleared (not pending or on hold) then you can issue a refund.

BUT if the person sending the payment used the goods/services option and you were charged a fee then that fee is not returned as part of any refund that you make, so tell them for that reason you will issue a part refund minus the fee element.

If the funds are on HOLD then wait until they have cleared before you issue a refund.
