Requiring a mobile number to access my paypal account

PayPal now requires a mobile number in order to access your account. I do not have a mobile phone and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I will purchase one for PayPal. I cannot get them on the phone to transfer funds sitting in my account. After I make that transfer, I will gladly stop using PayPal. Does anyone know how to contact other than the message center which you need access to your account to use?

Contact options for Paypal at the moment are accessed by clicking help/contact bottom left of Paypal pages...

1. Paypal phones are slowly re-opening and increasing in numbers (you can use the guest option if you can't log in).
2. Live chat is also randomly available.
3. You can send them a message, during business hours you may also be able to message whilst logged out.
Or
4. Have you considered contacting Customer Service via Facebook or Twitter?
You can send them a personal message from their Facebook or Twitter pages.
It's: https://www.facebook.com/PayPal and @AskPayPal for Twitter.

I don't have a mobile phone either, and feel like I am being held at ransom just to get into my account. Do they not care that they risk angering people? I'm not going to go out and buy a mobile phone just because paypal asks me for one. It's like they're looking for an excuse to draw themselves negative attention. If I have to, I'd much rather dig my heels and stop using paypal altogether.

Ditto re access issue and NO, none of the contact methods work if you can't get into your PayPal account and don't have Facebook/Twitter accounts. What did get through from the US: call[Removed. Phone #s not permitted] answer "access issue", then "none of the above", wait on hold for however long it takes (20-45 minutes in my experience). The first time I had this issue, it took multiple tries to get the account unblocked so I could access it again. Two weeks later access is blocked again and the person I reached was adamant that a mobile number was required, no exceptions. This on a day when I had paid a merchant and received money from relatives via PayPal with no issue. So I insisted that they send the money I had received to the bank account on file - which could take 7-10 business days. Apparently anyone without a mobile # can do everything EXCEPT access their account! I have no idea how this can possibly make sense to whoever makes these policy decisions.

We definitely aren't alone in having this problem. And currently it seems that paypal has decided it will require the use of a mobile phone number in the future...  Logging in whilst making a paypal purchase (I tried this on ebay) seems to be the only trick to temporarily gain access (short caving in, and myself magically owning a *NON-EXISTENT* mobile phone number). As for me, the writing is on the wall regarding the future use of paypal (also future ebay selling).
