Refund cancelled after case closed

I received an item that was not as described. The seller agreed a partial refund. I accepted, and the case was automatically closed. However, after a number of days showing as 'pending', the refund was cancelled. Now I am unable do anything with the transaction, since the case is closed, but I haven't received my refund. Is there anything that can be done? It seems strange to me that PayPal automatically close cases before refunds have been confirmed!?
