I sold an item on Facebook Marketplace in July 2019, and just a few days ago, received notice that the buyer has filed a dispute due to a suspicious transaction. I've been in touch with the buyer, who acknowledges receiving the item (he came and picked it up from my house), and claims that his PayPal account was hacked months ago and that this has been an ongoing "pain in the #&%" for him, and generally offered to help but so far hasn't contacted PayPal that I know of. He says his account has been frozen. He and I have been in contact via Facebook messenger. There is no dispute that he received the item. He acknowledges that. Furthermore, he says that his PayPal account was hacked months ago and that whoever hacked his account has been “getting cash advances” in his name for nine months.
I just got off the phone with PayPal customer service and they were of no help, but suggested I send an email to <removed>, which I did, but haven't even received acknowledgement of the email.
I completed the transaction in good faith five months ago and the buyer does not dispute that he received the item in question. But my PayPal account has been debited $100. Customer service claimed they could not help me, but I don’t see how this is my problem? The buyer’s account was hacked, or so he says. Either way, it seems as though it should be easily determined. I have screenshots of our conversation, which I've uploaded to the case. Has anyone had anything like this happen, and any advice as to how to resolve it? Customer service was absolutely no help and said it was between the buyer's credit card company and me.
