I'm getting a text message from the <removed> number that PayPal has used in the past to send me confirmation information asking me to confirm my previous transaction, listing the company it was made to and the exact amount, the text message however costs 99 GBP for me to send, thankfully the times that I did try to confirm it didn't go through and no money was taken out of my account (as far as I can tell).
After reading around this is a scam that has been occurring for some years now, I'm obviously going to ignore these messages however how can I trust this number anymore? I will likely have to mute it to stop receiving these spam texts, but that will mean not being able to receive the confirmation texts that I need no? And I can't see how doing what the recommended thing of reporting the text to the <removed> number will help in any way since it's already compromised.
I genuinely need help in figuring out what the right coarse of action is here, and ideally I would like to know how this has all been happening for years and nobody at paypal can't do anything to stop it.
