I was looking through the Friends and Family fees for both an American Paypal account and a Canadian Paypal account. It's worth noting that the fee information for Canadian Paypal accounts has been updated very recently - October 10, 2017. When comparing the breakdown for fees between an American Paypal account and a Canadian Paypal account, I noticed there are some discrepancies, namely when sending money by Friends and Family funded by your PayPal balance or a bank account linked to your PayPal account: American Paypal account: fee is waived sending to a friend and family member in the US or Canada. Canadian Paypal account: fee is waived only when sending to a friend and family member in Canada. For the US, it's a flat fee of $2.99 CAD. Why can't Canadians send to friends and family members in the US for free? Why does this discrepancy occur? I also noticed that Canadian accounts now pay flat fee values to other countries, while American accounts still pay a percentage value. I suppose the advantages and disadvantages will depend on the amount sent (e.g. an American account sending a large amount of money to the UK will result in a fee higher than if a Canadian account sent money to the UK and only incurs a smaller flat fee), but it still seems like American accounts still get the better end of the deal, considering there are likely more scenarios where Canadians are sending to American friends and families. Maybe the better question is why the fees aren't standardized (percentages vs flat dollar value fees). In any case, I hope someday that Canadians can eventually send to friends and families in the US without any fees too! references (must be logged out of your Paypal account to view both links without Paypal redirecting you): Fees for American customers: https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees#sending-friends-family Fees for Canadian customers: https://www.paypal.com/ca/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees#sending-money
