The first para was the clue to the solution. I had already set preferred payment to PayPal balance on my desktop. However, on the iPad, looking in My Wallet it was set to bank account. This now changed.

I have used PayPal for a number of years. Payments have always been taken from my bank account. However, for recent transactions on Ebay, PayPal has taken payment from my credit card. I have not authorised payments from my credit card. The transactions, that I do not dispute, do not appear on my PayPal account. How do I contact PayPal to find out what is happening?
