I sold a MacBook on ebay around the middle of May of this year. 45 days after the buyer recieved the item he requests a refund on ebay including shipping. I listed the item as fualty and that it did not charge. The buyer told me he tried to fix the laptop, but couldn't successfully replace the battery because the replacement also wouldn't charge. Since it was way past eBays 30 day buyer gaurantee I refused the refund and ebay immediately closed the csase. I didn't hear anything from the guy again and now 4or 5 weeks later there's a chargeback on the transaction and my account is negative over 1K dollars. Now here's the thing, The reason code provided is 063, and from my research it looks like that's a code used to describe the scenario where a person makes a claim based on the fact that they don't recognize a transaction (please correct me if i'm wrong). So it sounds like this guy called his CC provider and claimed to not know what this charge was for. I have his ebay msg clearly stating that he did indeed recieve the item and opened it up attempting to fix the unit and requesting a refund. (as if him not being able to repair a clearly described item is someone elses fault). I also have the UPS tracking number and i called UPS and they provided me a .pdf which includes the buyers name and address (which happen to be his paypal and ebay verified addresss) along with the signature which was required on delivery. The receipt even shows that i paid for laptop packaging from a local UPS store. I looked up the rules for chargebacks and if this guy was trying to recieve a chargeback for an item not as described, his cc company would require him to return the item to me. (chargeback code 053 I believe). I still believe his case in invalid because he bought the item knowing it was unable to charge, thought it does work while plugged in. At least if he returned it, I would be able to recoup some losses on this sale. If he just does a chargeback and gets to keep the mackbook and the 1125 dollars, then this is a serious problem with paypal. From all the horror stories with paypal I'm afraid of the outcome of this. Will they really make an effort to display my evidence to the CC company? This is the first time this has happened to me and the fact that they supplied that reason code makes me feel lile I have a pretty solid case to defend myself from this fraudulent chargeback. I guess my question is, does anyone have anymore specific information regarding that chargeback reason code and how paypal will handle this? I submitted all of my evidence and now it says being revieved by paypal. Should I just wait and see what paypal does next or should I call paypal and speak to someone over the phone as well?
