Well, I spent the wee hours of the morning straightening out a problem that I have no idea how long it had been going on... I wanted to put some funds in my PP account from a bank acct that is not attached to PP. I usually do this by just invoicing myself with a separate email address, and pay the invoice. This morning, I sent myself an invoice. I get the PP confirmation of the invoice being sent, but to a totally different NAME! Wha??? I double check my email address - yup, it is correct. So, I thought it might be a glitch. I went back in to PP, cancelled that req and sent a new one. Same thing - to a name I've never seen before! I hightailed it to my ISP/email prodiver to make sure I had not somehow let the email go, or otherwise changed it. Nope, there it was. I pinged it to see where the email states the owner lives - it was coming back to me. I immediately changed the password for the email account, which was the only thing I knew to do at that point. So, on the live chat with the ISP tech support, I ask them what the scoop might be. They still showed it as active and registered to me! They claimed I did the right thing by changing the password. They re-set the account for me, but in the process, I lost all the old saved emails. I don't know what the deal is, but what I suspect, is that this fraudulent person set up a PayPal account using MY email address for reasons unknown. I also tried to contact PP, but no one was available. I turned in an emailed request because it was too early in the morning to call them. Hope I hear back soon, but who knows. When I tried to send myself an email to that address from another one, it bounced back as undeliverable. Not being an email expert, I am guessing that it was actually being redirected somehow. I sent an additional money request, along with the "item description" notifying the fraud that I had already notified my ISP and PP of the problem. Amazing. Anyway - my advice - send yourself an invoice every once in a while, and make sure it goes to YOU. PP now has it set to where you cannot send it to any email that is on your own PP account (rats!), so choose another one that you have access to. Be vigilant. I rarely use this email anymore, so the fraud slipped right by me. After I got my "welcome to_____" email after the acct re-set, I tried to send myself another invoice. It STILL says the other person's name, but it came to MY mailbox. So, her fraud was delayed, but I still am waiting on PP to respond to figure this one out and close her fraudulent account.
