https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Settings/Adding-Gift-Cards/td-p/1416816 Once you add your virtual VISA gift cards, Paypal will put a temporary "charge" of 10 cents, so you don't have access to the entire $10 until at least 3+ days later. I added an American Express e-gift card to my Paypal account on Jan 6. The 10 cents "charge" is still pending today Jan 8. I am guessing the pending charge will fall off in the next few days.

Yeah, that statement on their websites is a blantant lie. My linked checking account is also used exclusively to receive transfer of money from items that I had sold on eBay. Now I'd rather pay the $1.50 for a paper check than lose $22+ with each overdraft fee. I don't see much. Because of Paypal's blantant greed they've lost me as a customer. Not that they care. And this isn't news to others who have been burned by Paypal.

Because of this deliberate flaw in their software, I got charged $22 overdraft fee by Wachovia. I know it was my mistake for not changing the default, but I didn't want the default to my bank account anyway. I am going to start avoiding Paypal whenever I can.

yes Just make sure you don't have a linked bank account. The Paypal software will take money out of your Paypal account first. If there isn't sufficient funds, then they take out of the bank account, then they take out of credit card. If you don't have enough money in your checking account, your bank will charge you lots of $$$ in overdraft fees.
