I'm pretty certain I was using PayPal as a checkout option for my recurring payments, but as I said, I've been paying with PayPal for years with the same recurring option without a problem and haven't even had to look at my LJ account, so I don't know that I remember 100% correctly. Regardless, it was either the PayPal checkout option or the PayPal Card and all of a sudden in February LJ let me know my payment didn't go through and my Professional Package had been cancelled and that's when I started investigating, so something changed with someone in February but no one was forthcoming with what the change was or that it was coming.
