"Disappearance" of account data, payments

A couple years ago I sold some items via eBay and PayPal. I noticed at the time that the payments from my buyers were not being reflected in my PayPal account. I became very ill at the time and was not able to pursue the problem, but I'd like to follow through now. The only possible explanation I could think of at the time was that PayPal underwent some changes (perhaps eBay acquired PayPal), and I think I had to change my login credentials. I think there were changes to my account, but I don't remember why or what.
How can I locate the missing money? Is it possible PayPal has two accounts for me--an original one and my current one-- and that the funds have been sitting in one of the accounts?
