ebay seller wants to deal directly

i saw an item on ebay and contacted the seller about lowering the price. he agreed and asked for my email saying he would send a direct invoice to my paypal account. when i expressed i wanted to go through ebay he said it was either through direct paypal invoice or the higher buy it now price on ebay. im not sure of paypals protection policies or else i would have already gone through with it. the seller has great feedback on ebay but what should i do?

As a buyer and a seller I have done this many times. Paypal will back you up if you don't receive the item. Make sure the person sending it uses a tracking number otherwise you both might be out. GOOD LUCK!
