preferred payment method isn't used

I recently received a new card and entered it on my PayPal account as my preferred method of payment.  Weeks later I made a purchase and PayPal ignored my preference and used my old credit card account which I still had on my account.  I checked to see if I had selected the new card as my preferred method, and verified that it was selected.  I hopefully resolved this issue by removing the old card from the account, but I am annoyed that PayPal disregarded my preference.  Does anyone know why this may have happened and how it can be avoided?

Did you confirm the card with the 4 digit code before you tried using it?
