Why are Paypal taking 36p on every £2 that I receive and 39p on every £3? This seems too high.

We have just set up a writing contest site (www.glitteryliterary.com) where people pay small amounts to enter our writing contest. After we have paid the prizes from the money we receive each round, the rest of the profit goes to charity.
Why are Paypal taking 36p from every £2 and 39p from every £3 that is paid into out Paypal account? This seems very high. Some of the payments are from abroad and our Paypal account is new so still holding some payments ("payment pending")?
(We have a Business account with Paypal but as of yet, we have not taken enough money to set up as official registered Business in the UK.)
Ay advice appreciated as every extra penny that Paypal take means money that is not going to help children living in poverty in the UK.
Thanks.
