I paid £81.29 for an item. The item did not fit my car so I returned the item but only got back £73.79. The postage back was free. Why have I been charged for doing nothing...thank you

Did you file a dispute / claim with paypal OR just sort it with the seller yourself?
If so then sounds as if the seller has given you a part refund to cover fees/postage costs?
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.
