Duplicate email address for PayPal is it possible?

I gave someone (a buyer) my email address to PayPal some money over. Then realised the email I gave them wasn't the one I use for PayPal. The buyer had already sent the money and said the name on the PayPal account was different to mine. I thought email addresses were individual? Anyway when the buyer emailed the PayPal account explaining the mistake, I received her email. I'm so confused - and PayPal chat or phone line aren't helping. How could someone else use my email address?

Hello @Dawnyc65

I am sorry for what has happened. If the payment was sent to the incorrect PayPal email address, the sender may have to report the transaction through the Resolution Center as goods and services payments are eligible for buyer protection. Regrettably, Friends and Family payments are not covered with PayPal Buyer Protection. These types of payments cannot be disputed. If the payment was sent to the unregistered PayPal account, the payment will remain as unclaimed. An unclaimed payment is a payment that hasn’t been accepted or denied by the recipient. These kinds of payments are automatically reversed after 30 days. How your money is reverted depends on how you made the original payment. If the payment is processed through a credit or debit card, it can take up to 30 days to appear on your card statement. Kindly note that you'll be notified to your email address if payments are sent to your account.

Regarding similar email address that you're referring to, it is possible that an account may have been set up in error, possibly due to a typing error in the email which is not uncommon. Please send us an email to unsolicitedemail@paypal.com with a brief description of your issue and the fact that you'd like to remove your email address from an unknown PayPal account. Please send the email from the email address that you want to remove.

Regards,
Ayesha
