Checklist: Before you ship

So you're expecting to receive a payment or perhaps you've already received an email stating that the payment has been sent.  We recommend checking the following items before shipping the item or providing your services.

1.  Emails can be faked.

You may have received a payment notification email that looks like it came from PayPal but did it really come from PayPal? Is someone trying to make you think you've been paid? Log into your PayPal account by manually visiting https://www.paypal.com.  If you have received a payment, it will always show in your PayPal history, even if the payment is still pending or on hold. If the payment has been sent to your account, there will be a record of that on the PayPal website within a few minutes after the payment was initiated.

2. Missing payments?

Perhaps you are certain that your client/buyer has sent a payment but the payment is not showing in your PayPal account. The payment may have been sent to the wrong email address or the email address is not confirmed on your PayPal account. Does the eBay listing, shopping cart or html code have the correct email address? Have you recently changed the email address on your PayPal account?  Make sure that payments are being sent to the correct email address and that email address is confirmed on your PayPal account.

3. Seller Protection

PayPal Seller Protection

If you are shipping a tangible item, the transaction may be eligible for PayPal Seller Protection.  Check the payment details to see if the payment is marked as eligible for PayPal Seller Protection.

I recommend reading the details of PayPal's Seller Protection Policy in the User Agreement as well:  Protection for Sellers

I also recommend reviewing our selling tips on the Security and Protection page.

Note for merchants:

If you're a doing a large volume of transactions where checking for each payment is not efficient, try using our free Instant Payment Notification (IPN) service.  These are notifications that get sent directly from PayPal's servers to your shopping cart or web server.  These notifications are also secure in that each notification is verified to be authentic by the PayPal servers.
