What can I expect if a seller refuses delivery of a return?

Hello, I'm hoping for some reassurance here please!
I have a high value item that was not as described and the seller has tried to make things as awkward as possible throughout. Now I must return with tracking and requiring a signature, with photos etc. but I'm concerned that the seller will refuse delivery and the item will go and sit in a warehouse uncollected before, presumably, coming back to me.
I'm worried that I might end up losing whatever I paid for expensive shipping on top of the item price, with the chance of even losing the item as well once it leaves here.
Does anyone have experience of what usually happens in these cases?
