Unauthorized transfer to my maypal from my own linked bank

I have been using PayPal for years and never had any issues. Two days ago, I received a confirmation email from PayPal that a bank transfer was requested and it will take a few days to clear. This wasn't a phishing email. I am in IT and I know. Without doing anything with the email, I logged into my PayPal account and sure enough, I saw a transfer request from my own bank to my own PayPal for $99.99. I checked the subscriptions and there are none that could have caused it. I checked automatic transfers and they are not turned on. I removed my bank account from my PayPal account. I changed my password and I enabled 2FA.

As of today, the money was withdrawn from my bank but still show unclear in PayPal.

I opened a case earlier this morning which was closed 10 minutes in with no notes or anything that I can see. I called PayPal and spoke to a rep who opened another case which was also closed within 15 minutes.

I know for a fact that there is nothing on my side that could have caused this transfer to occur. But I cannot understand what benefit it could provide to a hacker (if this was really hacked) to transfer money from my bank to my paypal, unless there is a downstream hacking action plan with that money. There has to be some vulnerability in PayPal where someone somehow is able to request a transfer without ever logging in.

Anyone ever heard of this or had this happened?

When I spoke to the customer rep, I told them that I removed the linked bank account because I was not comfortable with keeping it in there after the unrecognized transfer. When she created the new case, she added a note saying "bank account removed." I told her on the phone that you need to add more information to the case because it doesn't give information to the investigating team. Guess what?? My bank account was re-added automatically without my consent. My guess is that the investigating misinterpreted the note in the case, just as I had suspected, thinking that the hackers removed the bank account. I may just close all my paypal accounts. This is insane and ridiculously naive.

PayPal's customer service is ridiculous. Beating around the bush just trying to inform an agent is absurdly difficult. Then, as you said, a ticket goes in to the system, then it is closed, and things don't get resolved. ...The amount of money that has been lost becuase there is no follow up on real issues. It is like they have two checkboxes for customer service. Either you've been defrauded or not. Other than that, they don't know how to take care of all the issues that come along with running a financial institution...

What was described is exactly what happened to me twice. $980 last month and $960 3 days ago. I cannot figure out why or how money is being transferred from my bank account to my PayPal account. I called customer service to open a case but when I went to check the status, I found out the case is closed. What is going on? What benefit would this be to someone. I have not transferred any money and it is an inconvenience for this money to be taken from my bank account.

Hello @denysdand

Thanks for posting in the PayPal Community Forum!

I understand your concern about the unauthorized transfer to your PayPal account. You can transfer the funds back to your bank account and here's how : How do I get money out of my PayPal account? Also, I suggest you to update your password, security questions and adding PayPal’s 2-step verification (two-factor authentication) which gives you an extra layer of security when accessing your account.

Hope this information helps,

Bindu
